Some time ago I was working on a series of portraits of old soldiers for Memorial Day and arranged for Ed Platte, a World War I Marine and veteran of Belleau Woods to come to the studio. When asked about dress I told him to wear whatever he most wanted to be photographed in. When he showed up he was dressed in his WWI Marine uniform, which at age 80 fit him like a glove. He was apologetic that his boots had disintegrated years earlier and wore a pair of dress shoes instead. It was with sadness that I heard recently that the last of the Doughboys had passed away, which means Ed is among them. Perhaps this weekend you can take a moment and reflect on someone like Ed who made it possible for us to live free.
